Do You Really Need a New Social Media Strategy

Do You Really Need a New Social Media Strategy?

August 18, 2026•4 min read

Sometimes when the social media for your organisation isn’t feeling quite right, the instinct is to assume you need a new strategy, a new social media content plan or completely different content.

But that isn’t always the case.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that many of the conversations I have about social media don’t start with: “Can you manage our social media?”

They start with: “Would you mind taking a quick look at our page?”

Or: “Can I ask you a question about something we’ve been posting?”

More often than not, people aren’t looking for a complete overhaul. They’re looking for reassurance.

They want to know:

  • Are we posting the right things?

  • Does our content actually look good?

  • Is our tone of voice right?

  • Are we missing something obvious?

Sometimes, all they need is someone with experience to look at their social media and say: “You’re doing a great job. Keep going” or “I’d change these two or three things, and I think you’ll notice a real difference.”

Do we need a new social media strategy?

Not necessarily.

If your messaging is reasonably clear, your content reflects your organisation well and you’re already sharing useful or engaging posts, you may not need to start again. You might simply need to make a few improvements to your existing social media content strategy.

Sometimes the foundations are already there.

You just need fresh eyes to see them.

A phone call that reminded me of this

A little while ago, I got a call from someone I hadn’t spoken to for years. He runs a building company and was looking for some advice about his social media.

We chatted about the kinds of projects they wanted to showcase, particularly some before-and-after transformations.

While we were talking, I jumped onto their Facebook page. And I told him he was doing a great job.

Were they posting consistently? Not quite. But that wasn’t the thing holding them back.

What I saw was a business that genuinely cared about its customers. Their posts felt warm and approachable while still being professional. They were sharing time-lapse videos of builds, before-and-after albums and celebrating the work they were doing.

Most importantly, they sounded excited about the projects and the people they were working with. You can’t fake that. And it’s exactly the kind of content people enjoy following.

You may already have the right social media content

When you’re managing your own social media, it’s easy to become your own harshest critic.

You compare yourself to other organisations. You overthink captions. You wonder if anyone is even reading your posts.

Meanwhile, someone looking at your account with fresh eyes might immediately see that you’ve actually got some really strong foundations there. And you already have the right content. You just need to post it more consistently.

Sometimes the answer isn’t to start from scratch. It’s to build on what’s already working.

Fresh eyes see different things

When I review an organisation’s social media, I’m looking for things that are difficult to spot when you’re in the middle of it every day.

Things like:

  • Is your messaging clear?

  • Does your tone of voice feel human and consistent?

  • Would someone landing on your page understand what you do?

  • Are there content opportunities you’re overlooking?

  • Is there anything quietly holding your engagement back?

Sometimes the feedback is incredibly simple. And that’s the beauty of it.

Not every organisation needs a huge social media strategy document. Sometimes they just need clarity about what’s already working and where to focus next.

Sometimes a second opinion is enough

This is exactly why I created the Social Media Breakthrough. It’s for organisations that want expert eyes on their social media without committing to monthly social media management or a full strategy project.

For $150, you’ll receive a personalised video audit and document overview where I’ll walk through your social media and share:

  • what’s working well

  • what’s holding you back

  • where I’d focus next

  • practical improvements you can implement straight away

No fluff. No overwhelming document that gets saved in a folder and forgotten.

Just honest, practical feedback from someone who’s spent more than a decade helping organisations communicate better online.

Sometimes you’ll discover you’ve been worrying unnecessarily.

Sometimes you’ll uncover a few simple changes that could make a real difference.

Either way, you’ll come away with confidence that you’re moving in the right direction, or clarity about what to do next.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I know if our social media needs a new strategy?

Start by looking at whether your audience, goals or services have significantly changed. If they haven’t, you may only need to refine your messaging, content or posting habits rather than create a completely new strategy.

What should we look at when reviewing our social media?

Check whether your messaging is clear, your tone is consistent, your page explains what you do and your content reflects what your audience actually wants to know. It’s also worth looking for useful content you may already have but aren’t sharing.

Can a social media audit help a small organisation?

Yes. A focused audit can be particularly useful for small teams because it helps you decide what is worth spending your limited time on and what you can stop worrying about.
